There is no one right way to construct the shell of a sauna. In the old, old days, saunas were made of whatever was at hand: logs, animal hides, sticks stuffed with turf and mud, a hole in the side of a hill. And they all worked. They still work. And they all have their advantages and disadvantages.
Today, we have lots of options, and sauna builders use them all.
So why has Akkala Saunas settled on 2 x 6 stick frame construction when most cabin-style builders use 2 x 4?
Insulation.
2 x 6 framing allows us to use R-23 rock wool insulation whereas 2 x 4 framing only accommodates R-15 (fiberglass) to R-17 (rock wool) insulation. The result: your sauna heats up faster, stays hot longer, and requires less energy to run.
Strength and stability.
We build our saunas on 4 x 6 skids that we load onto a trailer and deliver to your site. Our saunas have heft and structural integrity. They won’t warp, twist or sag over decades of use. You can feel the solidity when you open the door, and you can be sure that your doors will be as aligned and smooth on your site as they were in our shop.
Silence.
Silence is underrated. Our saunas are silent. Leaving plenty of head space for wherever your mind may go when luxuriating in the löyly.
